International ‘Berta Caceres Vive’ Gathering Attacked: At least four people injured by rocks, machete cuts, punches
By Karen Spring of the Canadian Delegation to the “International Gathering Celebrating the Life of Berta Cáceres in Honduras, April 13-15, 2016
(Initial standoff, at 2pm, April 16, 2016, when armed villagers (to the right), were threatening the marchers, who aimed to walk down the road to the Gualcarque river, for the ceremony commemorating the life and vision of Berta Caceres. In the middle of this initial melee, Honduran police. When the International Gathering people marched back up this road, in the afternoon, they were attacked here, by the group of armed men.)
This afternoon, April 15, 2016, at 5:30pm, as international and national participants in this International Gathering, and Copinh members, were returning by foot from a peaceful celebration / commemoration activity at the Gualcarque river, they were attacked physically and verbally by armed individuals – armed with machetes and guns – who claim to be residents of San Francisco de Ojuera, Santa Barbara, the municipality where DESA is constructing the Agua Zarca dam on the other side of the river from the community of Rio Blanco.
Upon arrival, the armed individuals were yelling slogans of support for DESA and making racist comments against Copinh, whose members are of the Lenca people.
There are at least four people injured by rocks, machete cuts, punches and kicks to different parts of their bodies and many were hit with rocks. It’s possible there are more injured.
As Copinh denounced previously in similar attacks such as on February 26, 2016, days before Berta Caceres’ assassination, the armed individuals are thought to be paid by DESA to provoke Copinh members and allies who walked peacefully to the river and stood down multiple provocative attempts to incite violence.
When individuals from the Gathering were attacked, there were approximately 20 police present that stood by and failed to react to stop the attacks or arrest the perpetrators.
Copinh will be putting out a proper communique about the incident of repression, as will our Canadian delegation that was there.
